Macy’s Dads Talk Father’s Day

In celebration of Father’s Day (psst – it’s this Sunday, June 16), we talked to a few Macy’s colleagues about their most important role – being a dad! These dads are sharing advice and insights from their children and their favorite Father’s Day Gift Guide picks.

Lemel Hebert-Williams | Senior Software Engineer | Macy’s Technology

The word or phrase you would use to describe yourself as a father?

Launchpad – my girls know that I’m not the one to push them. I’m more interested in seeing where their own motivations and interests take them. They own their achievements 100%. A launchpad doesn’t take the rocket to space, but provides everything it needs to take off – fuel, guidance, stability, and trajectory. If I do my job, they will go much further than I ever have.

Best advice your father ever gave you?

“Live your life:” this sounded trite when I was young, but has taken on special weight now. It was his way of summing up self-determination, independence, and taking opportunities as they come. He absolutely “lived his life” to the fullest and looking back, I’m so glad he did.

How have your kids’ perspective on fashion, pop culture or social issues influenced your decision making or point of view on the business?

Seeing the acceptance and diversity in my kids’ circle of friends is inspiring. In our family, we always talked about everything: culture, music, society, science, business, relationships, money. Hearing my daughters’ perspective on advertising aimed at young women is especially enlightening. In the big picture, I am eager to see where a younger generation of leadership will take us.

Thoughtful and supportive.

How have your kids’ perspective on fashion, pop culture or social issues influenced your decision making or point of view on the business?

The future of my children is everything to me. I pay attention to what they are exposed to – from global affairs, to whom they listen to, and where they shop. Campaigns such as “Find the Remarkable You,” surround my children with empowering messages. This influences my own passion at work as part of Macy’s Interactive Design team. As a family, we are proud shoppers of Macy’s. I’m proud not only because I’m a colleague, but because I am proud of the corporate social responsibility that we lead within the industry.

The word or phrase you would use to describe yourself as a father?

Making it up as I go along.

Best advice your father ever gave you?

My dad would say, “Take it easy!” – and I find myself saying that every day as well.

How have your kids’ perspective on fashion, pop culture or social issues influenced your decision making or point of view on the business?

As members of Gen Z, my 10- and 12-year-old children teach me about how they want to interact with brands and their communication preferences, such as mobile. They love the curated specialty store setting that focuses on their interests – Go STORY at Macy’s and The Market at Macy’s! It’s also inspiring to see that they have no tolerance for injustice, are willing to stand up for what they believe is right, and actually do something about it.

Their perspective on fashion, while very different, has definitely influenced my view on the business and on fashion. They’ve taught me to make it easy, keep it fun and – most importantly – always make it comfortable.

We also tapped Durand Guion, vice president, Macy’s Fashion Office, for some expert advice on how to celebrate dad and make dad feel special this Father’s Day.

“Father’s Day is a time to celebrate those who go above and beyond in our lives,” said Durand. “We want to show dads that their efforts do not go unnoticed by highlighting their style and personality with gifts tailored to their hobbies and favorite pastimes. Whether he is a style enthusiast, life of the party, sportsman or groomed to perfection, our goal is to give back to the dads and father figures that do it all.”
