Beyond the Boardroom: Introducing Market by Macy’s

At Macy’s, we know that constant innovation is required to win in retail today. And that our customer has set the bar high for their shopping experience in our stores and online. That’s why we’re introducing Market by Macy’s, a new store format that features a discovery-led, immersive shopping experience with unique merchandise and a social space to shop, eat, drink and relax.

Market by Macy’s is smaller than your typical Macy’s store and is located off-mall in lifestyle centers. It features a mix of curated Macy’s merchandise and local goods, as well as local food and beverage options and a community-driven events calendar.

“Market by Macy’s is all about discovery,” said Rachel Shechtman, Chief Brand Experience Officer. “We wanted to build a new brick and mortar store that will be relevant years from now, and the first thing that came to mind was this modern main street. When you think about changing consumer behavior, you have this sense of community in a digital world, but people are also craving community in a physical world.”

The store will debut two new concepts, Getchell’s Apothecary, an exclusive beauty shop inspired by the first female executive to work in retail, Margaret Getchell, and an in-store food and beverage concept named Herald, which offers breakfast, lunch and snacks daily as well as choices of craft cocktails, beer and wine.

Market by Macy’s has event spaces to accommodate a range of community-driven programming from cooking tutorials and book signings to crafting and fitness classes. The new store format also will complement our main Macy’s boxes and will include a Happy to Help desk where customers can pick up BOSS orders from or make returns. 

“When you go into one of our Macy’s stores, you’re often going with intent – whether it’s to shop for a prom dress, graduation, makeup, etc. Here, it’s a combination. For the customer, it’s allowing them to discover Macy’s in a new way, as well as introducing new brands,” Rachel said.
