Collaboration Drives Macy’s Private Brands’ Success

It cannot be overstated – fashion exclusivity is key to Macy’s success. A crucial way our assortment is differentiated in the minds of our customers is through Macy’s private brands, available only in our stores and on macys.com.

Within Private Brands, the Product, Design and Brand teams lead the collaboration to create seasonal product assortments tailored to each brand’s “DNA,” capturing My Macy’s opportunities and reflecting key fashion trends. Development of product starts with the identification of big ideas and strategies for the season, focusing on trends that are brand right, and quantifying how many styles and SKUs are needed to support the business. These concepts are validated through partnership with the Omni/Digital teams.

When developing product and detailing specifications by style, the Design team is responsible for interpreting trend, silhouette, color and print. The Product team is focused on sourcing styles with the best vendors, whether overseas or domestically, to execute the best quality at the best value. These two teams work closely together to execute development of samples, which are then shared with the Omni/Digital teams during market week.

Product, Brand and Design partner with the support teams, Design R&D, Color, Fabric R&D and Technical Design, to leverage everyone’s expertise and insight. Let’s take a closer look.

Design R+D

  • Delivers trend forecasts and in-season direction in partnership with design and product teams to infuse newness into our brands.
  • Partners closely with fashion office and global forecasting teams to interpret Macy’s trends as appropriate by brand.
  • Works across families of business on major initiatives such as gifts, to deliver the most inventive ideas across Macy’s.

Color

  • Delivers seasonal trend forecasts, partnering with Design R+D, fashion office, global forecasting services and color service providers.
  • Creates a conceptualized color palette for design teams to support their seasonal vision.
  • Approves color during a product’s lifecycle to ensure vendor partners achieve standards.

Fabric R+D

  • Delivers international fabric trade show recaps, seasonal trend forecasts and fabrics trending on the retail scene, and updates through the season, in partnership with fashion office, Design R&D and overseas sourcing partners.
  • Partners with international vendors and mill suppliers to source fabric in affordable options, managing fabric throughout the development cycle and serving as technical support. Partners closely with product development and overseas teams through the process.

Technical Design

  • Once a garment is designed, builds a technical package encompassing fabric, trim (such as zippers), thread, fit, construction details and sketches to allow factories worldwide to bring the product to sample form. The measurements this team provides bring the garment to life and help create the pattern.
  • Checks pattern specs, reviews samples for fit on a live model and ensures garments are produced correctly before approving final sample to be manufactured into the finished product.
  • Creates specific fit guidelines, by classification, unique to each brand and its customers.

Behind every SKU in our 27 exclusive brands – is an organization of 1,800 professionals who collaborate strategically across functions and around the world,” said Wendy Katzman, SVP/Production, Private Brands. “Our Private Brands teams all work together and in collaboration with Macy’s Omni/Digital teams, to develop innovative products.

Now when you see a new Private Brand delivery hit the floor or discover product on macys.com, you can picture Macy’s full fashion force bringing it to life. This exclusive product represents the best of Macy’s – a true relationship between what our associates and customers ask for and what our Private Brands teams create. This strategic collaboration works best for the company when we all work to make the product successful.
