Macy’s Celebrates World Diversity Day

World Diversity Day is coming up on May 21, and Macy’s is gearing up to celebrate. Year-round, we embrace diversity and inclusion (D&I) in every aspect of our business – from our vendor community to our hiring practices to our in-store events, and beyond. Now, we’re shining a light on just a few of our colleagues whose day-to-day roles are to ensure that D&I are at the forefront of all that we do.

Describe your role at Macy’s.

I create meaningful outreach opportunities with our key Latino and Asian stakeholder groups, and then I manage those relationships and represent Macy’s at their community events.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about D&I?

D&I offers us the opportunity to learn from others and in turn, grow. What separates us initially will strengthen us ultimately if we embrace and accept our differences.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

The work I do depends on all of us! To be successful in my role, we all need to own a piece of D&I at every level throughout the company. It’s not just a one-or-two-person responsibility – it’s a total-organization effort.

How can our colleagues “Get Better Every Day” when it comes to diversity and inclusion?

Go out of your way to learn about cultures, orientations, races, religions, and preferences that are not your own.

Describe your role at Macy’s.

My role is to lead and support the organization by acknowledging the unique experiences and perspectives each individual brings to the table, and to continue to drive the organization forward in building a diverse and inclusive workforce.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about D&I?

There’s a great quote by Verna Meyers that goes, “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.” I think this is a very simple way of understanding the message of inclusion.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

My role’s success is directly tied to each people leader in our organization. We each play a crucial role in making Macy’s an inclusive workforce and an employer of choice by ensuring that everyone within the organization feels like they belong and can make a difference.

How can our colleagues “Get Better Every Day” when it comes to diversity and inclusion?

We should ask ourselves this question, “Am I doing everything I can to ensure that my entire team feels as if they are heard, valued and most importantly, that they belong?” If not, understand what has to be done to make the change. It’s the first step in being an inclusive leader.

Describe your role at Macy’s.

I am so fortunate to work with an incredible team that is responsible for the strategy and development of special events and marketing programs, including in-store multicultural events held in celebration of cultural heritage months.

What is one way you’re celebrating World Diversity Day?

By sharing some of the traditions of Greek Orthodox Easter with my team!

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about D&I?

Growing up, I was surrounded by linguistically- and culturally-diverse individuals who helped ground me with a framework in the importance of understanding others’ perspectives. Diversity and inclusion is the fabric of what makes a strong community – and a strong organization.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

The most important aspect of what I do is based in collaboration, working closely with a number of stakeholders focused on building by sharing ideas and asking for input through honest conversations.

As you move through your day, be aware of your interactions with others, be curious, and actively participate in supporting a diverse and inclusive environment.

What is one way you’re celebrating World Diversity Day?

By participating in different employee resource group (ERG) activities outside of the ones I’m used to

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

We are champions and advocates of opportunity inclusion. Our ongoing leadership in supplier diversity allows Macy’s to have a key opportunity to contribute to the overall economic viability for America to continue to grow and thrive. As a national retailer, with a very diverse consumer base, increasing our supplier diversity efforts gives us a competitive advantage in the marketplace. It is a true business case with a win/win for all included.

How can our colleagues “Get Better Every Day” when it comes to diversity and inclusion?

This needs to be an intentional activity. Reach out to someone who you feel is different from you. Once you do this, you will often realize that you will have more in common than you may have originally thought.

Describe your role at Macy’s.

I manage the national strategy for in-store events and event marketing centered on cultural heritage months, including Lunar New Year, Black History, Asian Pacific American, Pride and Hispanic Heritage Months.

What is one way you’re celebrating World Diversity Day?

I’m celebrating by continuing to look at how our events can positively impact our customers and communities on a national level, while setting Macy’s apart as a forward-thinking and innovative brand.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about D&I?

Diversity and inclusion is something that should be celebrated and strived for every day, not only in the workplace and in our stores, but also in our country and world.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

It is important in my role to always be on top of the latest developments in all areas, including fashion, entertainment, technology, politics, art, and business, and how these areas intersect within our company and initiatives.

How can our colleagues “Get Better Every Day” when it comes to diversity & inclusion?

By always listening, learning, and being open to everyone and everything.

What is one way you’re celebrating World Diversity Day?

The D&I team will celebrate by hosting our fifth event at Herald Square with a group of impressive Black and Hispanic high school students we’ve partnered with at the Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx. It will be a hands-on “Dress for Success” soft-skills workshop, led by a diverse array of our Macy’s colleagues and ONYX and La Voz ERGs and more, that will help ready them for today’s multicultural workplace.

What is one thing you’d like the organization to know about your role?

Supporting diverse community organizations isn’t just about buying a table at galas or writing a check. At Macy’s, we have a small, but mighty team that prefers to roll up our sleeves. We work closely with our partners to create unique programs that naturally fit and raise Macy’s brand awareness, like outfitting diverse students with their first professional wardrobes for summer internships. It’s so rewarding to help shape future generations through our commitment to support education, including an LGBTQ alternative prom, a college bus tour for young African American high school kids, and empowerment workshops for college-bound young students.

How can our colleagues “Get Better Every Day” when it comes to diversity and inclusion?

Intentionally step out of your comfort zone and your work silos. Seek out different voices, cultures, and lifestyles when forming teams, gathering input, or working on projects to gain valuable new ideas and perspectives.
