The Anna Sui x INC collection hit Macy’s stores and appeared on macys.com earlier this month. Macy’s private brand, INC International Concepts, teamed up with the iconic designer to create the collection for Macy’s, a glamorous, daring interpretation of a Western theme. The line features blouses with dreamy sleeves, dresses in bold prints, handbags, shoes, and much more.
The collection is the latest in a line of exclusive designer collaborations for Macy’s, including YYigal and Cynthia Rowley. So what makes Anna Sui x INC special? Well, Macy’s went behind the scenes to find out from the designer herself.
Anna Sui is the epitome of the American dream. Growing up in the Detroit suburbs, she started making her own clothes at age four and was determined to become a fashion designer. She studied at Parsons School of Design in New York City and launched her first collection in 1981. Known for her eccentric ideas, unique designs, and never wearing the same outfit twice in a year, she is one of the most extraordinary designers of our time. Today she has more than 50 boutiques in eight countries and her clothing is sold in 300 stores in more than 30 countries.
In fact, Sui’s connection to Macy’s first started 36 years ago. “I actually began my career selling Macy’s my first collection,” said Sui. In 1981, Sui was working for a sportswear company, but filled with dreams of starting her own line, she designed a few pieces of clothing on the side. To her delight, Macy’s was one of the first companies to order her designs. “That’s how I started my business,” Sui added of the early collection. “I was so excited that Macy’s came back and proposed this collaboration.”
The collection created in partnership with Sui was inspired by elements of Americana including cowboys, cheerleaders, Hollywood movie queens and Westerns, though few people know about her musical inspiration. Songs like the Byrds’ “Wasn’t Born to Follow,” Eddy Arnold’s “Cattle Call,” and the Twin Peaks’ “Walk to the One You Love” added the Western flavor Sui was seeking in her designs.
Additionally, Sui curated a collection of her favorite pieces from INC, aptly titled Anna Loves INC, which will be available at Macy’s stores nationwide and on macys.com this fall. Highlighting vivid autumnal prints and colorful embroidery, each item is identified by Anna’s signature rose and can easily be mixed and matched with the Anna Sui x INC Collection. Macy’s customers can also accessorize their texts and tweets when they download the campaign’s limited-edition keyboard of Anna Sui-themed emojis. The free app is available through iOS, Google Play, and at INCemojis.com. The download will be stocked with emojis, stickers and gifs that represent Anna’s unmistakable style.
Sui was a natural fit for the INC design collaboration. Her previous collections have portrayed distinctive Americana themes that mesh perfectly with the whimsical spirit of the Western trend at Macy’s this fall. What’s truly evident is the careful thought and detail given to each piece; in the form of lace, embroidery and sparkling shapes. Sui’s signature style truly shines.
