Earth Week at Macy’s – Go Green!

Earth Week has always been a busy time at our locations across the country as our colleagues make a difference for our planet. Our commitment to creating a more sustainable environment is reflected in the inspiring work of our Macy’s Go Green Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). We’ve collected stories of inspiring moments from Macy’s, Inc. volunteers around the country. From coast to coast, here’s what you did to make a greener difference for Earth Week 2017.

Go Green ERG, MMG, New York City

The Macy’s Merchandising Group’s (MMG’s) Go Green ERG hosted industry experts for a panel discussion on sustainable packaging efforts and options. Other MMG Earth Week activities included volunteering with urban school agricultural project Green Bronx Machine, a supply swap (Colleagues brought unused office supplies and traded for needed items), and a “Power Hour” that included switching off electricity. “Earth Week is always a big event at MMG,” said Michael Singer, vice president of Customs and Compliance at Macy’s Merchandising Group.

Go Green ERG, Macy’s Progress Place, Springdale, OH

The Go Green ERG at Macy’s Progress Place kicked off its first-ever Earth Week celebration in a big way, including a new Go Green Garden. Go Green ERG co-chair Maureen Hunt shared the line-up of events: a Lunch & Learn about effective composting, Gorman Heritage Farm volunteer clean-up event, and a presentation by a Cincinnati Zoo horticulturalist. Everyone was surprised at Friday’s closing event with a garden-themed cake to celebrate the opening of the new Go Green Garden.

Go Green ERG, Downtown Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Corporate Office and Progress Place Go Green ERGs celebrated Earth Week with 40 volunteers at Gorman Heritage Farm, a 122-acre working and educational farm committed to promoting sustainable agriculture and locally-grown food. Volunteers prepared a field in the Market Garden for planting potatoes and cleaned out barns and other outbuildings in the farmyard. They also had opportunities to make some four-legged friends, including Shorty, the miniature horse, and a goat named Amelia.

Go Green ERG, MCCS, Clearwater, FL

The Macy’s Credit and Customer Services (MCCS) Go Green ERG in Clearwater, Florida celebrated its award-winning sustainable garden and held a bottle- and can-recycling competition. Like several other Go Green ERGs across our company, the group held a “Trashion” show, featuring recycled or reused garments.

Go Green ERG, Ala Moana and Kaahumanu Stores, Hawaii

Our Go Green ERG in Hawaii held two beach cleanup projects in Maui and Oahu with 70 to 80 volunteers. Thanks to their dedication and energy, these beautiful beaches are that much cleaner and safer.

Go Green ERG, MST, Johns Creek, GA

The Go Green ERG at Macy’s Systems and Technology (MST) in Johns Creek, Georgia is in startup mode. However, according to John Taylor, director of Service Support and leader of the new ERG launch, it’s far enough along to get in on the Earth Week fun. Appropriate for the technology team that keeps our systems running smoothly throughout the company, the MST team held an electronics recycling event.

With our long-standing commitment to sustainability and the major progress we’ve made in reducing our carbon footprint, we’re proud of our Go Green ERGs at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s for their hard work. We applaud them, not only for their Earth Week efforts, but for making sustainability a year-long commitment.
