For the past five years, Macy’s has teamed up with Nashville-based nonprofit Clothes4Souls for the “Buy a Coat & We’ll Donate One” campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our customers and partners, the national campaign has resulted in more than 200,000 new women’s, men’s, and kids’ coats donated. That’s a retail value of more than $8 million since 2013.
Coast to Coast sat down with Molly Langenstein, General Business Manager, Ready to Wear, and Susan Eskew, Buyer, Women’s Coats, who have been two of the incredible leaders at the helm of this major initiative.
Molly: I was on the team five years ago when Dustin Jones and Jennifer Kopkowski created the event, which allowed us to give back to the community in a very meaningful way while also driving sales in October. Since then, it’s continually grown into the major campaign it is today.
Susan: I became involved when I joined the Women’s Coat team four years ago. Our whole team, as well as the Men’s and Kid’s team, and of course Marketing, really drive the initiative and I find it to be so rewarding.
Susan: Each year, my team volunteers at the Bowery Mission in New York to distribute some of the coats we’ve secured for the campaign. This is when we see the impact of our campaign for the people we help. The appreciation for each coat is humbling. Everyone is so kind and grateful. We also receive a lot of thank you notes from kids who have received coats. They have such sweet and heartfelt stories. I’ve kept many of the notes and hung up in my office as a constant reminder to appreciate everything.
Molly: Distributing the coats, which is something we do with dignity and respect. It’s incredible to watch people transform right before our eyes. I also love working with our amazing vendor partners who have been generous and supportive of this event for so many years and have made it possible.
Susan: Being able to bring joy to over 200,000 people. To many, they are receiving more than just a coat. This is something brand new that they will wear to an interview, work or to school. It gives them confidence, keeps them warm and brings a smile to their faces.
Molly: We do a lot of great give back projects at Macy’s. What’s special here is that we get to help people choose something on their own without the hindrance of money. We set up mirrors; help them find styles they like. The experience for them is what makes this special.
