At Macy’s, Inc., giving back is a core part of our culture. We see it every day through our volunteerism, corporate giving and cause marketing. We have a positive impact on the communities we serve and, in times of need, we also support one another – colleagues helping colleagues.
2017 was a year of devastating natural disasters – many of which impacted our colleagues and our communities. And we responded like no one else could. We established relief centers where families could replace basic necessities. Colleagues like Precious Anaya, Macy’s Almeda, detailed how in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, her fellow colleagues were willing to bring her food in the midst of the flooding: “They were willing to go above and beyond to help me out.”
We gave each other rides to work. We opened our homes to fellow colleagues. We were there for one another in a display of care and support that has become synonymous with our culture. In short, helping each other is what we do. This month, we’re launching a colleague assistance program that will put spend and process behind our collective desire to give.
A 501(c)(3) charity that will provide rapid, direct financial assistance to our people in times of need.
Inspired by our previous hurricane relief efforts, the new North Star Relief Fund will allow us to respond to colleagues in need – whatever the need may be – year-round, quickly and meaningfully. We will help those experiencing a range of life’s toughest obstacles, including: death, damage to a home, domestic abuse, military deployment, violent crime and accidents.
In order to launch the best and most effective initiative possible, we spent a lot of time planning across teams. This was truly a cross-functional effort as colleagues from human resources, stores, technology, finance, communications and merchandising – across Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Bluemercury – eagerly signed on to bring the idea of colleagues helping colleagues to life.

This August, as we come together to strengthen our communities through our annual summer giving campaign, the Big Give Back, help us to show up in times of need for our colleagues. Consider giving to the North Star Relief Fund.
