Macy’s Backstage Partners with PowHERful

Macy’s Backstage took center stage at PowHERful Foundation’s 2018 Enrichment conference at Google’s New York City offices on July 14. More than 300 young women, ages 14 to 23, learned firsthand that when you look good, you feel good – especially when staying within budget with help from Macy’s Backstage!

The participants gathered at the free day-long leadership and educational summit, and were led through a Dress for Success presentation by Macy’s, showcasing ways to feel your best in professional attire. Macy’s own Kristyn Doar-Page, VP, Diversity & Inclusion Strategies, hosted the fashion sessions, which included an informative shapewear segment from Diana Hilaire, manager, D&I Strategies. A makeup demonstration and Q&A helped the ladies find their remarkable selves for upcoming interviews and workdays.

To prepare for the fashion segment, the models, including Sharai Rosario, intern, Macy’s D&I Strategies, traveled to the Queens Place Macy’s Backstage in Forest Hills, NY, to be outfitted in trendy, smart pieces at affordable prices. Like Rosario, a Ladders-to-Leaders Program scholar, the models were all hand-picked from our long-time Macy’s partners, the 100 Black Men of America’s “Jr. 100” and PowHERful Foundation scholars. The models strutted career wardrobes in front of the audience to showcase head-to-toe looks that each cost less than $100.

“PowHERful truly educates some of the best and brightest young women of color, so it is exciting to support this event for the sixth time and to teach them stylish, smart wardrobe, shapewear and make-up techniques,” said Doar-Page. “As Macy’s continues to expand our Macy’s Backstage shopping concept to 150+ stores by 2019 across all regions, we wanted to introduce these ladies to fashion-forward looks and deals with significant savings on top-quality products.”

What is PowHERful? PowHERful, co-founded by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien, is dedicated to helping young women of color get to – and through – college with support from educational, mentoring and scholarship opportunities. The nonprofit provides financial assistance, mentorship and wraparound support to help these young women achieve their fullest potential. It also provides them with a bridge between obstacles and opportunity, giving them the experiences, education and resources needed to overcome unexpected barriers to success.

Macy’s Backstage is an on-mall off-price shopping option and each Backstage location is tailored to deliver the perfect style for each community it serves. In April, Macy’s announced plans for a Macy’s Backstage distribution center in Columbus, Ohio. The distribution center is expected to open in fall 2019 and Macy’s, Inc. anticipates it will create approximately 400 jobs.
